ALA’s Libraries Transforming Communities initiative uses community engagement tools to support their efforts. Learn about the Harwood Institute Public Innovators practice and how it has improved library led community engagement efforts. “Turning outward” is about orienting yourself toward the community rather than toward your institution. Because any change that is meaningful is going to start with the community and they are going to have ownership over it. Alice Knapp is President of the Ferguson Library in Stamford. She was Director of User Services, including strategic planning, at Ferguson after serving as Executive Director of the New Canaan Library. She was named a Mover & Shaker of 2003 by Library Journal for her work in establishing community partnerships.
